Early Life
Colin Luther Powell was born in Harlem, New York City’s borough of Manhattan, on April 5, 1937, to Jamaican parents Maud Ariel (née McKoy) and Luther Theophilus Powell.
Maud was employed as a seamstress and Luther as a shipping clerk. Powell attended the now-defunct Morris High School and graduated high school in 1954.
In 1958, he earned his college degree from City College of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and described himself as an “average intellect” student.
Powell earned an MBA degree in 1971 and also holds an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration from George Washington University.

Powell was enlisted in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps while studying at City College of New York. He referred to the event as being one of the luckiest things that ever happened to him.
Powell took part in the Pershing Rifles, an ROTC fraternal club and drill squad founded by Gen. John Pershing when he was just a cadet. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating.
Between 1962 and 1963, Captain Powell worked as a South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) adviser in the Vietnam war. Powell also obtained a Master of Business Administration after returning from Vietnam and then served as a White House Associate for President Richard Nixon between 1972 to 1973.
Powell served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Defense Department, from October 1989, until September 1993. He was the youngest officer and the first Afro-Caribbean American to hold this post when he was appointed at 52 years of age. Powell was the first-ever JCS chair to acquire his promotion from the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Powell served as a military man for approximately 35 years, reaching the status of general and holding a range of administrative and staff responsibilities.
On August 25, 1962, Powell and Alma Johnson got married. Michael Powell is their son who served as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Linda Powell, a film actress, and Annemarie Powell, a professional model, were Powell’s daughters. Powell did die of COVID-19 health problems on October 18, 2021, aged 84, while also being examined for myeloma at ‘Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’.
