On March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, Chaka Khan was born “Yvette Marie Stevens”. She described her father “Charles Stevens” as a beatnik and her mother “Sandra Coleman” as a hardcore woman.

She was the eldest sister out of five siblings. Yvonne, Chaka’s younger sister later became a successful R&B singer with the stage name “Taka Boom.” Her only brother Mark was the founding member of the group “Jamaica Boys.”

Khan was brought up in a Catholic family and was driven to practice jazz at an early age. Her grandma mentored her in the jazz and funk music genres, and this was the point when she released her passion for music and made a career out of it.
