His dad owned two massive iron companies in Chicago “Scrap Corporation of America” and “Iron & Metal Company.” While Mandy’s mom was a housewife and author of “Grandma Doralee Patinkin’s Jewish Family Cookbook.”

Mandel was raised in an affluent religious family and when to a Jewish school for early education.  In 1970, Patinkin graduated from South Shore High School and enrolled at the University of Kansas. 

Later, he changed the educational institution and enrolled in the renowned performing art institute “Juilliard School.” Mandel attended the Juilliard School with Kelsey Grammer.
