Stephen Wilson Bethel, the actor was born on February 24, 1984, to Joyce Maynard and Stephen Bethel. He grew up in the Hillsborough neighborhood of New Hampshire, United States.

His mother was of Jew and English background, his grandfather was an English man, and his grandmother was a Jewish immigrant from World War II. He also shares Welsh background, inherited from his father. In 1989, Bethel’s parents’ marriage ended in divorce. After the separation, Bethel was relocated with his mother to Keene, New Hampshire along with his siblings.
